What is Mold?

Mold can best be understood as unwanted fungi that is found both indoors and outdoors. There are many different types of mold. The most common include cladosporium, aspergillus, and stachybotrys atra, or black mold. Cladosporium is usually green or black, and it grows on painted surfaces, toilets, and fiberglass air ducts. Furthermore, aspergillus is a genus consisting of several hundred mold species typically found in home air conditioning systems and on foods. Stachybotrys atra is a black and green fungus that grows on materials with a high cellulose content. For example, this type of mold grows on drywall sheetrock, wood, and dropped ceiling tiles.

Mold grows on surfaces that have been damaged by moisture and water. Excessive humidity, condensation, water leaks, and flooding are all major causal factors for mold growth.

How Can Mold Affect You and Your Family?

Mold can have serious consequences for human health. When mold in the home is first noticed, it is extremely important that it is treated. Left untreated, mold is associated with health issues such as infections and allergies. In fact, mold is known to cause allergy symptoms such as rashes, red and watery eyes, and a sore throat. Other symptoms associated with breathing in mold spores include chronic sneezing and coughing, mucus membranes on the nose and throat, irritation to the eyes, persistent headaches, and chronic fatigue. Those who have allergies and asthma are especially subject to developing these symptoms when breathing in mold spores. Additionally, the longer mold sits on the property, the more damage it has the potential to cause as it grows and becomes larger. This demonstrates the necessity of eliminating mold from your home as soon as possible.
