Sewage backups are very serious and should not be mishandled or left untreated. Sewage and the water from sewers are labeled as “Black Water” or Category 3. Sewer water holds this classification as it is grossly contaminated and likely contains harmful microbes which could cause severe illness or death if ingested. Contact with Category 3 water should never be considered safe.
